From community-based residential care to the offices of La Travers\u00e9e, M\u00e9lina Siwic has dedicated her criminology expertise to supporting people affected by sexual violence. Today, as a psychosocial worker and Assistant Director of Clinical Services at La Travers\u00e9e, she draws on her understanding of social and judicial systems to support victims and their loved ones across the Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Criminology to La Travers\u00e9e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Holding dual bachelor\u2019s degrees in criminology and psychology from the University of Montreal, M\u00e9lina Siwic focused much of her academic work on sexual offending and later joined the Ordre professionnel des criminologues du Qu\u00e9bec. She began her career working in community-based residential facilities, supporting individuals involved in the justice system as they navigated social reintegration and the conditions of their release<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, she felt called to put her expertise to work for those living with the impacts of sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI wanted to contribute to the well-being of the people who experience these realities every day,\u201d says M\u00e9lina.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Supporting People on Many Fronts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e9lina wears many hats at La Travers\u00e9e. As a psychosocial worker, she supports victims and their loved ones in navigating immediate and ongoing challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cA large part of our work focuses on how these experiences affect each person\u2019s daily life, especially anxiety and emotional regulation,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Her background in criminology and her understanding of police investigations, the judicial system and correctional environments also allow her to answer many questions people may have about these processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the weight of the situations she encounters, M\u00e9lina says she is continually inspired by the resilience of the people she supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cFrom one meeting to the next, people begin to reconnect with their own inner strength and rediscover small moments of joy, without allowing what happened to define them,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As Assistant Director of Clinical Services, M\u00e9lina also contributes to the coordination of La Travers\u00e9e\u2019s activities. She helps facilitate access to services, supports the clinical team<\/span><\/a> and takes part in various research initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Working at La Travers\u00e9e and within the CIViS integrated sexual violence services model<\/a><\/span> gives M\u00e9lina the opportunity to collaborate closely with partners from many different sectors. She works alongside colleagues from the Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie Crime Victims Assistance Centre (CAVAC), healthcare professionals, community organizations and institutional partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e9lina also maintains a strong connection with the detectives of the Longueuil agglomeration police service (SPAL), whose work reminds her of her early professional experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cEven if I\u2019m not directly involved in investigations, being able to follow the broader process still speaks to the criminologist in me,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Running for the Cause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was also as part of a team made up primarily of SPAL police officers that M\u00e9lina participated in the Bromont Ultra<\/a><\/span> for the first time in 2025. This large-scale fundraising endurance event brings together thousands of athletes each year to support various causes, including the fight against sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s through this kind of fundraising that we\u2019re able to offer free psychotherapy and psychosocial support services \u2014 especially at a time when the demand continues to grow,\u201d says M\u00e9lina.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She is currently training for the next edition alongside Nya, a Siberian husky she adopted three years ago. Evening walks and long hikes in the forest with her companion \u2014 affectionately described as an \u201cunstoppable machine\u201d \u2014 also help her stay grounded and maintain balance in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e9lina is deeply grateful to everyone who supports La Travers\u00e9e through donations or volunteer involvement. She believes that simply talking openly about sexual violence \u2014 a subject that remains too often silenced \u2014 can encourage victims to seek the help they need<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
