A Mother–Son Journey of Giving Back

Donating money is one way to support a cause that matters. But for Michèle Laframboise—Partner at Normandin Beaudry Asset Management—the greatest reward comes from giving her time and serving as a volunteer board member at La Traversée. Her son Étienne shares that same vision and contributes actively to the organization’s mission. This is the story of a mother–son duo with generosity at heart.

A Gesture of Gratitude

It was only once her children were older and her career more settled that Michèle found room in her life for volunteer work—and realized just how much joy it brought her.

“I discovered a bit late that getting involved is really about connecting with people and seeing the tangible impact,” she explains. “It creates a virtuous circle we should all start as early as possible.”

Her son Étienne understands this well. Despite a full life—university, work, sports, and community activities—he devotes more than 50 hours a year to volunteering.

“I’m grateful that my schedule is filled with things I choose to do and not things I’m forced to do,” he says. “The least I can do is give some of my time so others can have that same privilege.”

Choosing a Cause: Sexual Violence

Michèle and Étienne are regulars at the Bromont Ultra, a legendary trail race that raises funds for organizations like La Traversée. At first, they supported all participating causes. Over time, they chose to focus more intentionally on the issue of sexual violence.

“Sexual violence often goes unseen in our day-to-day lives, yet it’s a reality that shocks me deeply,” says Michèle. “It’s a power imbalance—an abuse of trust and love—that shatters someone from the inside.”

The statistics speak for themselves: 80% of adult victims knew their aggressor, a figure that rises to 95% for children.

Étienne adds: “If something happened to someone we love, we’d want to offer them all the help in the world—all the resources possible. That’s why I’m involved.”

Giving Is Also Receiving

Shortly after joining La Traversée’s Board of Directors in 2020, Michèle realized that her role went far beyond governance and fundraising.

As a member of the organizing committee for La Traversée’s annual Golf Classic, she discovered a passion for rallying people, raising awareness about sexual violence, and supporting a deeply committed team. She also highlights the volunteer engagement of police officers—on top of their investigative work—and the tireless creativity of the organization’s leadership in public education.

“It’s inspiring to see the exceptional dedication of so many people… but they can’t do it alone,” she adds.

Passing On Values

Over time, the philanthropic activities and race training became cherished traditions—moments just for the two of them.

“It’s like watering a plant: the time we spend together nourishes our relationship,” says Étienne.

Michèle is proud to see her son embrace these values and give them such an important place in his life. For her, they’re essential ingredients for a meaningful, fulfilling life.

“We often chase happiness through travel, relationships, and busy schedules,” she observes. “But happiness is right here within reach—and it costs nothing. Just our time.”
